Catching up with day 1 and 2 of @joyjenstudio flower challenge! I've never felt confident drawing/painting flowers so I'm looking forward to getting some practice in this month. Here we have Echinacea and Clematis to kick things off.

The summer arty challenge with @clairefontaine

🌞The summer arty challenge with @clairefontaine_finearts and @darwi_world is finally here! This is my entry for the theme of "summer break."

🌿 For me, the ideal summer break involves exploring beautiful places that combine nature and history. So my piece features a view across a summer meadow to the ruined 12th century priory on Lindisfarne Island in Northumberland, a really magical place!

🎨 Part of the challenge was to use the materials kindly provided by Claire Fontaine. I was really interested to experiment with their sand-toned mixed media paper, and I really liked the effect of letting the paper show through in certain areas to capture the warm stone of the priory.

Paper: Clairefontaine PaintON Mixed Media MIX9 Pad 27 Sheets 250gsm in Neutral
Pencils: Darwi fine art coloured pencils and watercolor pencils.
I also used a bit of gouache and a white pencil for highlights.

This July it will be five years since I started painting again and first created this account. This little Cornwall spread is from 2023 and once of the first times I felt like I was making art that really captured a place with the feeling I wanted. Swipe for the evolution from 2020 (watercolour, no drawing on top allowed), 2021 (collage, embracing wonkiness), and spring and autumn 2024 (finally feel like I know my materials!).
